Sam Langford, prizefighter, died in Boston (b. 1883 in Weymouth Falls). In 1999, Langford was voted Nova Scotia’s top male athlete of the twentieth century. Jack Dempsey once said of Langford, “I think Sam Langford was the greatest fighter we ever had.” African Nova Scotian playwright Jacob Sampson later wrote a play about Sam Langford’s life called Chasing Champions, which went on to win six Theatre Nova Scotia Merritt Awards, including Outstanding Actor, New Play and Production.
