African Nova Scotian poet, playwright and educator, George Elliott Clarke (b. 1960), was appointed Canadian Parliamentary Poet laureate. A native of Windsor, and a seventh-generation Canadian of African-American and Mi’kmaq heritage, Clarke became an officer of the Order of Nova Scotia and the Order of Canada. He has received the Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry (2001), the National Magazine Awards’ Gold Medal for Poetry and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award.
