William A. White was born in Virginia to two former slaves. He became the second graduate of African descent from Acadia University (1903). He later became a chaplain and the first black officer serving in the entire British Army during the First World War. He was the father of Portia White, as well as politicians Bill and Jack White. He was the first Canadian black person to be given an honorary doctorate (from Acadia University), in 1936. (Photo: Rev. William A. White. Acadia University Archives.)
