Yvonne Atwell became the first African Nova Scotian woman to be elected as an MLA (for the NDP). Born in East Preston, she later wrote, “Social activism is about building a place where no matter what this person does in their life, they’ll never forget what they learned. It’s not like they took some type of training and then left halfway through it — even then, it’s not a failure, because it’s the lessons that you learned to get where you need to go.”
