The paddle steamer City of Monticello encountered a violent storm and sank five miles off Yarmouth Cape, en route from Saint John to Yarmouth. Forty-six lives were lost, making it one of Yarmouth’s greatest shipping tragedies — leaving fifteen widows and forty-nine fatherless children. The ship was owned by the Yarmouth Steamship Company.
