William Hall (1827–1904) won the Victoria Cross (VC) on this date for his action at the Siege of Lucknow — the first African Nova Scotian person to win the VC. At the time, Hall was with the Royal Navy, serving as captain of the foretop with the HMS Shannon. The British army’s commanding officer of the Lucknow Residency during the siege, with the 32nd (Cornwall) Regiment of Foot, was Nova Scotian born Colonel John Inglis (1814–1862).
