Born in the United States to Canadian parents, Knowles studied at Brandon College and was ordained a United Church minister. A friend of Tommy Douglas, he was moved by his passion for social justice to join the CCF, was elected to the House of Commons in 1942, and worked there on behalf of his constituents for more than four decades. Knowles was asked three times to become Speaker of the House of Commons, but preferred to remain an opposition member, fighting for the causes he embraced throughout his career.
